Literature Text

The party of strings chorus into song
The pipes synchronize in harmony
Inviting all to dance along
To the smooth and haunting melody.
Lighthearted feet waltz across the room.
Guest parading round in dramatic costumes.
What is what, and who is who?
A night of trickery and fun.

The clink of flutes filled with sparkling champagne.
Laughter spilling across the room.
Music floating like a feather, sweetly playing
As the lady shifts in her shoes.
There were faces everywhere, yet unseen,
masked in decorated mystery.
Could she find the one that haunts her dreams?
The Masquerade has begun.

Feathers sprout from dresses and stylish hair.
Sequins glitter with every swish and sway.
Hooded eyes steal few glances here and there
At the silent gentleman with the focused gaze.
He had eyes for one, one girl alone
The lady that has never known,
how much his heart beats for her own.
The Masquerade goes on.

In a room full unsaid secrets.
In a labyrinth full of lies.
Their eyes connect from a distance,
Both widening in surprise.
Her beauty left him mesmerized,
Her anxiety made her terrified,
Will they tell each other what they feel inside?
The Masquerade goes on.

He offers his hand, 'May I have this dance?'
She nods shyly in reply
Another chapter in their romance
Emotions persistently in disguise.
They keep their bodies close, encased in warmth
Blissfully in each other's arms.
The song ends and they politely part.
Will the Masquerade ever end?
I am open to any and all criticism. Feel free to point out mistakes. I'm not even sure if the tenses are correct, so come at me Grammar Nazis. Was inspired by an old scene I wrote about a Masquerade and wanted to make an ambiguous sort of story for it. I hope you all like it.

What a stream of sensual imagery. At first, I picture a party, but it seems to me that the poem has a double meaning. By the fourth verse, it seemed more like an allegory to life, perhaps even a certain part of society in general. Like masks to hide your true face?
